You Can Trust Your Body and Still Listen to Your Doctor

Dear mother,

Somewhere along the way, birth has become divided into two sides.

On one side, we hear:

“Trust your body. You don’t need medical intervention.”

On the other:

“Trust your doctor. They know best.”

But perhaps birth preparation is not about choosing one over the other.

Perhaps you can do both.

You can trust your body and still listen to your doctor.

Your body is doing something extraordinary during pregnancy and labour. Your uterus contracts, your hormones change, your cervix gradually opens, and your baby moves through a remarkable physiological process.

But trusting your body does not mean assuming that everything will always unfold naturally or predictably.

Sometimes your body needs support.

Sometimes your baby needs help.

And sometimes a medical intervention can be exactly what protects you or your baby.

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Nature and Medicine

Seeking medical care does not mean you have failed your body.

And asking questions does not mean you distrust your doctor.

You can say:

“Can you explain why you are recommending this?”

“What are the benefits and risks?”
“Is there another option?”
“What happens if we wait?”

These are not difficult questions.

They are informed questions.

And you deserve to understand what is happening to your own body.

Your Doctor Sees Things You May Not

During labour, your healthcare team may be monitoring things you cannot see – your baby’s heart rate, your blood pressure, bleeding, the progress of labour, or other clinical signs.

So when your doctor or midwife recommends something, it is worth listening carefully and understanding the reason behind it.

At the same time, you don’t have to switch off your voice simply because you are in a hospital.

Good maternity care should involve you.

And Then There Is Tawakkul

As Muslim mothers,

we prepare using the means Allah has given us.

We learn.

We ask questions.

We prepare our bodies and minds.

We choose appropriate care.

And then we remember that the outcome has always been in Allah’s hands. You are not required to control every moment of your birth.

You are required to take the means available to you and place your trust in the One who knows what you cannot see.

So, dear mother, trust your body. Seek good care. Ask questions. Stay open to what your baby and your circumstances may need.

And if your birth takes an unexpected turn, remember:

Needing help does not mean your body failed you.

Sometimes strength looks like continuing naturally.

Sometimes strength looks like accepting help.

And sometimes the most courageous thing a mother can do is say:“I understand. Tell me what my baby and I need right now.”

“I understand. Tell me what my baby and I need right now.”
